Washing Machine Smell Fix

Musty, sour, wet dog: whatever you'd call the smell, it points somewhere specific — usually the door gasket, the drain filter, or a detergent habit. These guides help you work out which, fix it properly, and change the two or three small habits that stop the smell from coming back a month later.

Start at your symptom

  1. Washer smells musty, even after cleaning? Here's what you missed If the smell comes back within days of cleaning the drum, the smell was never in the drum.
  2. Front-load washer smells? Why front-loaders smell worse than top-loaders Not a faulty machine, and not your housekeeping. It's the design — which means the fix is a habit, not a repair.
  3. How to clean a washing machine rubber seal (door gasket) The gunk isn't plain mold, which is why a wipe with a damp cloth never gets rid of it.
  4. The drain filter: the smelly part nobody ever opens Owned a front-loader for years and never opened the little hatch at the bottom? That hatch is probably your answer.
  5. Clothes smell musty or sour after washing: machine or habits? If the machine smells fine but the laundry comes out sour, the machine usually isn't the problem.
  6. Does leaving the door open actually work? It's the rare piece of laundry folklore that's simply true. It just isn't the complete fix it gets sold as.
  7. How to clean a washing machine with vinegar (and when bleach or a cleaner works better) Vinegar is a descaler. GE's top-load odor page and Samsung's Sanitize cycle allow it for odors, each with its own steps; Bosch advises against descaling with it. On the other maker pages we checked, the cleaner named for a clean cycle is bleach or a washer cleaner.
  8. Why the smell comes back a month after cleaning If you've cleaned the machine properly twice and the smell came back both times, your cleaning isn't the problem. The one-big-clean model is.
  9. Washer smells like rotten eggs or sewage? Is it the machine or the drain? If cleaning the drum didn't touch it, check the drain and the hidden pump filter before cleaning again.
  10. Top-load washer smells musty or like mildew? Where the gunk hides Top-loaders smell too. The gunk hides in the softener dispenser, the agitator if you have one, and up the tub walls, and cold washes and heavy doses keep feeding it.
  11. Why does my washer smell? A smell-by-smell guide Name the smell, then note where it's strongest. That points to one place to look. Burning, gas or a strong rotten-egg smell means stop first.
  12. Washing machine detergent drawer mold? Clean the housing, not just the drawer The gunk on the drawer is the easy part. The housing it slides into and the small cap in the softener section can stay damp and dirty after you've rinsed the drawer, which is how the smell can come back.
  13. Washer clean cycle: what it actually cleans, and what it can't reach The clean cycle washes the drum. On a front-loader, it doesn't scrub the folds of the rubber door gasket or the roof of the detergent drawer's slot, and it drains through the filter without emptying it. LG, Samsung and GE each list those parts as separate jobs to do by hand.
  14. Towels smell musty or sour when wet? Why clean towels go sour after one use Clean towels that turn sour after one shower are often carrying what the wash left behind: soil, detergent and softener in the loops, and moisture they never fully lost. Getting wet again seems to be what lets it smell.
  15. New washing machine smells? What's normal and when to stop using it Three makers' support pages describe a smell that fades over the early washes or cycles. A burning smell that lasts past Samsung's or LG's window, or a hot or burning smell at the plug, means stop.
  16. How to clean a washing machine with citric acid, and when not to Citric acid is a descaler: it dissolves limescale. Bosch says not to use it in its machines, and LG's front-loader page says to avoid acidic cleaners in its Tub Clean cycle, so check your manual first.
  17. Clothes still smell like sweat after washing? Why, and how to wash them In one study, washing cut sweat odor, but polyester still smelled stronger than cotton afterward, and the authors suggest odor buildup in polyester may be cumulative. Rule out a musty smell first, then follow detergent and sportswear makers' advice: wash sweaty clothes soon, inside out, with room in the drum.
  18. How to get mildew smell out of clothes: a rescue wash matched to the care label Rewash in the hottest water the care label allows, at the detergent's dose line, and sniff the load while it's still wet. Still musty? Wash again with oxygen bleach if the label's triangle permits. Already dried? Add the oxygen bleach to that first rewash, label permitting. Dry only once it smells clean.
  19. How to clean a top-load washer, with or without an agitator Brush out the dispenser and wipe the rim and lid with a damp cloth. Then run your maker's clean cycle on the empty tub with only the cleaner it names, straight through, and leave the lid open afterward. Agitator or not, the makers' clean-cycle steps don't change.
  20. How to clean a washer drain hose, and when to replace it or call a plumber Unplug, turn the water off and lay a towel down. Move the hose end from the drain pipe into a bucket or sink, then plug in only to run a spin. Strong flow usually points to your house drain; a trickle, likely to the hose or washer.
  21. Where to put detergent in a washing machine: front-load, top-load and pods Detergent goes in the main-wash (detergent) compartment; softener and liquid chlorine bleach go in their own slots where the washer has them. Pods go in the drum on most of these machines, not the detergent dispenser unless it has a cup made for them. Don't fill past the MAX line. That's per LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and GE's own pages and manuals.
