Washer smells like rotten eggs or sewage? Is it the machine or the drain?

An eggy or sewer smell can come from the washer or from the drain it empties into. A two-minute test tells you which, and what to do next.

If cleaning the drum didn't touch it, check the drain and the hidden pump filter before cleaning again.

You ran the clean cycle or the vinegar, and the rotten-egg or sewage smell came back. An eggy, sulphur or sewer smell usually means water sitting where it shouldn’t: inside the machine, in the drain the hose empties into, or occasionally in the hot water itself. A washer cleaner reaches the drum, not the drain or the hidden filter pocket at the bottom. Find the source before you clean again. (Musty or wet-dog rather than eggy? See why a washer smells musty even after cleaning.)

First, find where the smell is

Whatever you smell, check the hose depth first; it takes a minute. Then sniff the empty drum and, on a front-loader, the little hatch at the bottom. Lift the grey drain hose out and sniff the standpipe it hooks into. If your hose connects to the waste pipe under a sink instead, there’s no depth to measure: sniff the plughole.

Drain hose too far into the standpipe? How far it should go

Samsung’s support page is blunt: a sulphur or sewage smell means the hose is in too far, and drained water is siphoning back into the washer. A hose wedged or taped in airtight can do the same. Each manufacturer sets its own limit:

BrandWhat it saysApplies to
Samsung6–8 inches (15–20 cm) at mostIts washers generally
Whirlpool4.5 inches (113 mm) at most; air gap, no tapeFront-loaders
GE Appliances5 inches (13 cm) at most; air gap; a snug fit can siphonOne top-loader (GTW680; copy of GE’s instructions)
LGMeasures differently: hose end in the elbow bracket, 4 inches (10 cm) past it at mostTop-loaders

To fix it:

  1. Pull the hose out and rinse the end.
  2. Reinsert it to your manual’s figure. Without the manual, about 4.5 inches (113 mm) meets the Samsung, Whirlpool and GE limits. On an LG, keep no more than 4 inches (10 cm) past the elbow bracket.
  3. Leave the fit loose so air gets in, and fasten the hose with its bracket or tie so it can’t slide down. Samsung also warns not to remove the screw holding the hose to the back of the machine.
  4. Run a rinse and spin, and sniff again the next day. Still smells? Drum: the machine. Pipe or room: the trap.

A dry trap: why the laundry room smells like a sewer

A drain’s trap (P-trap, or U-bend) holds a plug of water that keeps sewer gas out. Leave the drain unused for a while and that water evaporates; laundry or utility room drains and floor drains are common culprits.

Pour a cup or two of water (roughly 250–500 ml) into every little-used drain nearby, and repeat monthly. A thin layer of mineral oil (baby oil or liquid paraffin) on top slows evaporation. Smell gone by the next day? That was it.

Gurgling while it drains

If the drain is poorly vented, the rush of a washer emptying can pull the trap’s water out behind it, letting sewer gas in. The sign is gurgling from the standpipe or a nearby sink as the washer empties, then the smell. That points to a venting problem: the drain isn’t getting enough air through its vent pipe. It’s a plumber’s fix.

When the smell is in the machine

With the hose depth right, look for stagnant water your earlier clean couldn’t reach. On a front-loader, the pump filter pocket behind the bottom hatch holds water that never fully drains, and a clean cycle or vinegar wash doesn’t empty or scrub it.

So on a front-loader, start there: how to drain and clean the filter. Unplug the machine first and put a towel and a shallow tray under the hatch. Top-loader owners: see the top-loader note.

The rubber door seal can hold residue too (here’s how to clean it). Samsung also lists an unlevel washer that doesn’t drain fully, clothes left in the drum, and too much detergent. If you clean with bleach, never mix it with vinegar or ammonia.

When it’s a plumber job

Call a plumber if:

  • the pipe or room still smells after the hose depth is right and the traps are topped up, or that smell returns within days
  • drains gurgle when the washer empties

An eggy hot tap points to the water heater or supply: a plumber or water-treatment specialist. If only the drum still smells after the hose, filter, seal and other checks in the machine section, book a washer service visit instead.

If it’s musty rather than eggy

Musty, damp or wet-dog smells hide in different places: see why a washer smells musty even after cleaning.
